.Best Barbecue Place You’ve Never Heard Of

Double D BBQ

Yes, they’re only open three days a week and never during dinner hours, but God bless you if you’re lucky enough to get a hold of some of the slow-cooked, crazy-smoky brisket they’re dishing up at Oakland’s Double D BBQ. The house-made barbecue sauce (a tangy-sweet tomato-based version) is tasty if lacking in heat, and the side dishes are passable — but the star here is the meat itself, especially that brisket: incredibly tender and lush, with nice burnt edges and just the right amount of fat. And did we mention smoky? Your fingers and your clothes will smell of it for hours. Bring a hearty appetite or maybe a couple of friends: All of the meats are sold by weight, and the smallest amount they’ll sell you is a half a pound.
