Acme is definitely born-and-"bread" in Berkeley (sorry). Its baguettes are among the best in the East Bay: The sweetdough baguette, one of the bakery's four original breads, is a bit milder than its sourdough version but just as delicious, with a touch of Spanish and Tunisian olive oil or artisanal cheese. The organic wheat and barley baguette is leavened with very little yeast and the prior day's dough as a pre-ferment starter. Soft and wholesome with a satisfying crunch, Acme's baguettes are more than just a foundation; they complement whatever they're paired with, which is why you'll find them at restaurants and grocery stores all over the Bay Area. So throw some butter, jam, or cheese on one, grab a bottle of wine, and have yourself a Parisian picnic — all without leaving the East Bay.
