.Best Art Walk That’s Not Art Murmur

Piedmont Avenue Art Walk

Never mind that there’s only one official gallery — CK Gallery — on the whole street; Piedmont Avenue has been quietly brewing a great art scene for the past year. Its monthly Art Walk on every third Thursday features more than two dozen venues where local artists and craftspeople show their work. The offbeat locations include a video store (Video Room), a book shop (Owl & Company Bookshop), a gym (Flex Circuit Gym), and even a dry-cleaning shop (Piedmont Avenue Cleaners), using art as an excuse to have a block party: a way to get out, explore, and meet the neighbors. Erica Skone-Rees, who owns the boutique The Rare Bird and who organized the event, has galvanized the local community to present a low-key alternative to Art Murmur and the throngs it attracts. The Piedmont Avenue Art Walk works because it’s not trying to be another Murmur — it’s happy with its quirkiness and fun because of it.
