.Best Affordable Alternative to High-End Artisan Ice Cream or Sorbet

Flavor Brigade

Listen: We love Scream Sorbet as much as the next person, but there’s a cost associated with that kind of artisanal Pacojet-powered frozen confection. For those of us ballin’ on a budget, the Philadelphia-style Italian ices (“water ices,” as they’re called in Philly) and frozen custards at Flavor Brigade, in the Dimond district, scratch the same itch. With a lot less fanfare than many of his more upscale competitors, owner Braedon Galloway also makes his ices from scratch, using real fruit. And when he tells you there isn’t a more refreshing treat to be had on a hot summer day, he isn’t kidding around. Meanwhile, fans of soft-serve ice cream should exercise caution before trying Flavor Brigade’s delicious frozen custard — the stuff is seriously habit-forming. Best of all, the shop is generous with samples; there’s always a $0.99 flavor of the day; and the portions, even for a “small” order, are gigantic by local standards.
