Berlin and Back On Two Sticks of Gum

When: Sun., July 18, 7 p.m. 2010

Danville appears to have a thing for heroic airmen, because before there was Mike "Sully" Sullenberger, there was Colonel Gail Halvorsen, who famously dropped candy on the children of Berlin and who will be speaking on Sunday, July 18, at the Church of Latter-Day Saints (655 Old Orchard Rd, Danville). The operation, which took place against the backdrop of the Russian Blockade of West Germany in the wake of World War II, was duplicated by a number of other crews, sparked a media sensation on both sides of the Atlantic, and is said to have done wonders for American-German relations after the war. Galvorsen, otherwise known as the "Berlin Candy Bomber," will be introduced by Danville mayor Mike Doyle, himself a veteran of the airlift. 7 p.m., free. 925-837-9456
