Berkeley West Edge Opera Presents The Carmen Fixation

When: Fri., March 11, 8 p.m. and Sun., March 13, 2 p.m. 2011

The two leads in George Bizet's opera Carmen, Carmen and Don José, had some serious love addiction issues that cried out for intervention. In order to bring their obsessions front and center, Berkeley West Edge Opera's Music Director Jonathan Khuner and Artistic Director Mark Streshinsky have created The Carmen Fixation. In their less than two-hour adaptation, performed in English, the location is switched from a cigarette factory to an upscale nightclub, and elements of the libretto are moved around. Buffy Baggott stars, with Streshinsky directing and Robert Ashens conducting. At El Cerrito Performing Arts Theater in El Cerrito High School (540 Ashbury Avenue, El Cerrito) Friday, March 11 at 8 pm, and Sunday, March 13 at 2 pm. $69 - $29, with discounts for those 30 and under. 510-841-1903 or BerkeleyOpera.org.
