When it comes to the Berkeley City Council, the cost of not reading the fine print is $93,500. That’s the pricetag for “police overtime, supplies, and other costs linked to Tuesday’s massive, all-day protest and rally” in Berkeley over the U.S. Marines recruiting station and the council’s reaction to it, according to today’s Oakland Tribune . It turns out the money was wasted. Yesterday’s San Francisco Chronicle reported that some council members did not realize that they had voted on Jan. 29 to send a letter to the Marines saying they were “unwelcome intruders.” Why? Because they had failed to fully read a recommendation from the city’s Peace and Justice Commission that included the offending statement that caused a national outrage and resulting expensive protests.
