.Berkeley Lab Awarded for Breakthroughs

Three new technologies developed by Lawrence Berkeley National Lab have been recognized among the top 100 “significant proven technological advances” of the year by R&D Magazine. Among them: a laser-detected MRI that eliminates the need for the object to be placed inside a large magnet, thereby allowing imaging of a wide range of objects; a “Low Swirl Injector,” which reduces greenhouse gas emissions and pollution from gas turbines; and a “Berkeley Unexploded Ordnance Discriminator,” an electromagnetic system that can determine the location, size, and shape of unexploded buried weapons and explosives quicker and more accurately than previous methods. Perhaps most surprising about this technology is the fact that there are more than 28 million acres of land in the U.S. that cannot be used because of such “buried unexploded ordnance” or “UXO.”
