Berkeley Dance Project 2010

When: Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m. and Sundays, 2 p.m. Continues through April 25 2010

The talented, if low-profile Cal dance department's annual Berkeley Dance Project concert returns with relevant contemporary pieces that edify and entertain (and, in true inclusive Cal style, feature electrical-engineering and chemistry students alongside the dance majors.) In this year's show, Fresh Take - Moving Now - Looking Back, four choreographers revisit and re-imagine the past: Project director Peggy Hackney restages a 1930 Doris Humphrey piece based on Shaker dance, award-winning choreographer Katie Faulkner pokes holes in the veneer of suburban life, visiting artist Jacinta Vlach explores the roots and history of reggaetón, and department head Lisa Wymore takes us back to the 1970s, when Yvonne Rainer's "everyday movement" bumped formal technique off its pedestal. At the Zellerbach Playhouse (Bancroft Way and Dana St., Berkeley), Fridays through Sundays, Apr. 16-18 and 23-25. Meet the artists at post-performance discussions following the Apr. 16 and 18 shows. Fri.-Sat. 8 p.m.; Sun. 2 p.m.; $10-$15. 510-642-8827 or
