Berkeley Arts Festival

When: May 19-31 2010

After years of transforming abandoned storefronts into makeshift concert halls, the Berkeley Arts Festival finally found a home at -- well, another abandoned storefront. This month, festival curators and their artist brethren occupy the former home of Judah L. Magnes Museum (2121 Allston Way, Berkeley), while the museum moves to a new, spiffier venue on Russell Street. Up next: A lunch concert by pianist Jerry Kuderna on Friday, May 21 (noon, free);and a multimedia show featuring Dean Santomieriand Julie Oxendale, who will act out a story that involves a sewing machine, a guitar, and a 1938 De Soto hubcap, among other bric-a-brac, on Wednesday, May 19 (8 p.m., $10). Also on Friday, progressive jazz duo Steve Adams and John Hanes are slated to perform, accompanied by video projections (8 p.m., $10). And rest assured the venue won't look completely denuded, thanks to a solo painting exhibition by Berkeley artist Bob Brokl, which runs through May 31. BerkeleyArtsFestival.com
