Fans of Edward Gorey and ghost stories alike, rejoice! Oakland illustrator Ben Catmull’s new book, Ghosts and Ruins, brings Gorey’s creepy-but-whimsical style back to life. The coffee-table art book is a series of gorgeous renderings of forgotten haunted houses of Catmull’s imagining. The book goes through each sinister space, providing both Catmull’s haunting sketches and his fictional backstories for how the houses came to be haunted in the first place. But, like Gorey, Catmull adds just a touch of humor into each story — making his creepy, fantastical universe more the stuff of fairy tales than horror flicks. Join Catmull this Thursday at Diesel (5433 College Ave., Oakland) as he shares and signs copies of the new book.
