Rated PG 103 minutes 2014

The sly and wonderful costume drama by director Amma Asante and screenwriter Misan Sagay starts out like any other Jane-Austen-style coffee-table spectacle, but soon ventures into a pointed discussion of race, gender, and social class in 18th-century England, in its chronicle of the life and times of a half-black young noblewoman named Dido Elizabeth Belle. English actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw excels as the bright, headstrong Dido, with first-rate support by Tom Wilkinson as her aristocratic uncle, Emily Watson as her aunt, Miranda Richardson as a scheming neighbor, Sarah Gadon as Dido’s “sisterly” cousin, and Sam Reid as the romantic son of the local vicar. It’s the second directorial effort by actress-turned-filmmaker Asante, and it’s recommended (105 min.).
