Rated R 109 minutes 2018

It’s not exactly in the John le Carré class, but writer Tony Gilroy and director Brad Anderson’s Middle East yarn is a high-class spyboiler – thanks mainly to the screen presence of Jon Hamm as a conflicted former US government negotiator called back to the title city, where his wife was killed by a terror attack years earlier. Even though the bitter Cold War realpolitik games -- involving CIA ops, US diplomats, Palestinian activists, and the Israeli Mosssad -- leave a bitter taste, we can still admire Anderson’s (Transsiberian) touch with the period material, Gilroy’s (the Bourne movies) plot mechanisms, and the brisk deceptiveness portrayed by actors Hamm, Rosamund Pike, Dean Norris, Idir Chender, and Shea Whigham (109 min., 2018, rated R)
