Behemoth

When: Mon., April 23, 7:30 p.m. 2012

When news hit the blogosphere a year and a half ago that Nergal (aka Adam Darski), the lead singer of the Polish blackened death metal band Behemoth, was diagnosed with advanced-stage leukemia that chemotherapy couldn't help, metal fans let out a collective cry. His illness seemed to strike at a particularly unfair moment -- just as the band was wrapping up a worldwide tour in support of its successful ninth album, Evangelion, which peaked at number 55 on the Billboard 200 chart. It couldn't have happened to a better -- or better-liked -- band. But since then, Nergal has recovered from a successful bone marrow transplant and is now back on the road with his first US tour since his diagnosis. Organized by Decibel magazine, the tour also features Swedish black metalers Watain (known for its bloody live shows), Devil's Blood, and In Solitude. Apparently, Behemoth has a new album coming out this year. Now you can cry tears of joy. At Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco) on Monday, Apr. 23. 7:30 p.m., $26. SlimsPresents.com
