Beatriz at Dinner

Rated R 83 minutes 2017

Devastating social satire. A gentle, sensitive Mexican immigrant massage therapist (Salma Hayek, in convincing character), whose car breaks down while she’s visiting a rich client (Connie Britton) in her palatial seaside home, is invited to stay for a dinner party with the client’s real-estate-developer friends – chief among whom is a matapobre dealmaker (John Lithgow) whose hobby is hunting endangered species in Africa. Whereupon sparks fly. Hayek and Lithgow put on quite a show as the combatants, with director Miguel Arteta and screenwriter Mike White – they made Chuck & Buck and The Good Girl together – supplying the ammunition. As good a cinematic summing-up of the Trump era as any film out there. Yet. Also with David Warshofsky, Amy Landecker, and Jay Duplass (83 min., 2017, rated R) (K.V.)
