Theater & Performing Arts

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through April 24 2011

Not only is Ashkon Davaran a messianic fanboy for the San Francisco Giants, as indicated by the two million-plus views for his 2010 anthem "Don't Stop Believing." He's also packing. Oh yeah - and he's also a consummate actor, and a bearded one at that. Davaran proves as much in Beardo, a new rock musical based on the life of Russian mystic Rasputin. In this version of the story, the monk heals everything from sexual repression to hemophilia, partly with spells and partly with sheer personality. As Beardo, Davaran manages to barge right into the palace of Tsar Nicholas II ("the door was open," he alleges) and disrupt the social order. He sleeps his way through the tsar's cabinet, subdues women with his amazing priapic powers, and undermines the authority of ridiculously costumed aristocrats. Josh Pollack, Sarah Mitchell, Dave Garrett, and Anna Ishida all contribute to the hilarity of this Shotgun Players production, directed by Patrick Dooley. It's wonderfully ribald. Through April 24 at The Ashby Stage (1901 Ashby Ave., Berkeley), $17-$26. 510-841-6500 or
