Bay Area Street Photography Now

When: April 21-30 2011

Anthony Delgado, Ralf Hillebrand, Thomas Lavin, Charlotte Niel, Kirk Thompson, and Gary Weiner of the Bay Area Photographers Collective reaffirm the pleasures of reality for discerning eyes. Delgado's Day of the Dead celebrants ("Couple," "Mother and Child") convey both the fun and strangeness of playing muerto. Hillebrand's bridges and overpasses framed by car windows ("Richmond Bridge," "Interstate 580, Emeryville") are dynamic yet monumental. Lavin's panoramic views (musicians in "Pike Place," Giants fans in "Montgomery Street") capture the spectacle of public life as an aggregate of individual dramas. Niel and Thompson portray the odd, accidental beauties of the American roadside in black and white ("City Slickers," "What If …") and color (various untitled works), respectively. Weiner's photo quartets transform casual glimpses of urban life ("Hustler," "Hand," "The Word of the Prophets") into stills from mysterious movies. Bay Area Street Photography Now runs through April 30 at PHOTO (473 25th St., Oakland). 510-407-0449 or
