When: Sun., April 3, 9 a.m. 2011
If you've yet to try orienteering, this may just be your chance. On Sunday, Apr. 3, the Bay Area Orienteering Club hosts an annual challenge for beginners through experts at the Sunol Regional Wilderness (1895 Geary Rd., Sunol). Use a map and a compass to reach a series of checkpoints scattered throughout the park, then return to the start/finish point to check your time. But no need to feel intimidated; this event is particularly hospitable to newbies, offering seven courses in increasing levels of difficulty. The easier, on-trail courses are suitable for families with young children, and short instructional clinics will be offered throughout the morning for beginners. Registration open 9 a.m.-noon; start times available 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; courses close at 2 p.m. $2-$15 per course. BAOC.org.
