BART Police Oversight Bill Delayed Until 2010

Assemblyman Sandre Swanson of Alameda withdrew a watered-down version of the BART police oversight bill after legislative leaders refused to fast-track it before the end of the legislative session on Friday, according to the Berkeley Daily Planet. The bill will be brought back next year, presumably in its original form. BART board members had secretly gutted the bill after it received opposition from a statewide police officers' group. But the changes, according to the Planet, caused several community leaders and members of Oscar Grant's family to withdraw their support of the bill. The oversight plan was developed in response to the fatal shooting of Grant last New Year's by then BART cop Johannes Mehserle.
