.BART Cop Suit Now $50 Million

Oakland attorney John Burris raised the claim by family members of Oscar Grant to $50 million in a federal lawsuit filed yesterday against BART. Burris told the Trib’s Kelly Rayburn that he upped the damages request from $25 million because the evidence against BART is even more compelling than before. Grant was shot to death while lying facing down at the Fruitvale station by BART cop Johannes Mehserle. Mehserle has been charged with murder. In addition to Mehserle, Burris is targeting BART officer Anthony Pirone for allegedly assaulting Grant. Pirone’s attorney says his client did nothing wrong. All we can say is BART better have the best insurance on the market, because $50 million probably won’t be enough.
