Bangkok Dangerous

Rated R 100 minutes 2008

Nic Cage won an Oscar for his role as a self-destructive drunk. Subsequently, we all assumed he liked to make good movies. Not true. In fact, it now seems more likely Cage likes to make bad movies. How else can you explain just about everything he’s starred in since Leaving Las Vegas, including his most recent, Bangkok Dangerous? This time around, Cage plays an assassin named Joe — get it, an average Joe — sent to Thailand to rub out four targets, only to have matters complicated when his soul finally gets in the way of his work. The result is a dark, dreary John Woo knock-off punctuated by moments of standard Cage eccentricity. In other words, a bad movie. Just like Cage likes it (99 min.).
