Bad Brains

When: Tue., Aug. 24, 9 p.m. 2010

Over three decades, punk group the Bad Brains rose from garage roots to cult status. Among their many achievements: an eight-disc catalogue, a successful foray into reggae, source material for Henry Rollins and Beastie Boys, and inspiration for the Facebook group "300 Million Strong to Get Bad Brains to play Obama's Inauguration." (Mission aborted, sadly). Eccentricity and a wandering palette gave Bad Brains a lot of mileage, and a lot of staying power. The group went through many iterations and mixed genres in an odd, creative, and sometimes perverse way. But the current band members -- Dr. Know, Darryl Jennifer, Earl Hudson, and (we hope) the notorious frontmanH.R. ultimately returned to its hardcore roots. They'll descend on Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco) Tuesday, August 24, with support from the equally inventive free jazz trio, Broun Fellinis. 9 p.m. $26 Slims-SF.com -- Rachel Swan
