Away We Go

Rated R 2009

The casting of Saturday Night Live’s Maya Rudolph and fellow TV star John Krasinski (The Office) as Verona and Burt, an expectant couple traveling the US looking for the ideal place to raise a family, is the best thing about this stealthily satirical road-trip sitcom. Second best thing is the organic-feeling screenplay by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida. Sam (Revolutionary Road) Mendes’ direction takes third prize, with honorable mention to the large cast of supporting actors — Maggie Gyllenhaal, Carmen Ejogo, Catherine O’Hara, Jeff Daniels, Chris Messina, Allison Janney — playing essentially every stereotype available in North America. We feel sorry for everyone’s kid except Burt and Verona’s (98 min.).
