Australian Bebop Ragas

When: Sun., Aug. 10, 8 p.m. 2008

Stephen Kent has taken the didgeridoo, an ancient Aboriginal folk instrument from the outback, to the outer limits, forging a unique style that's impossible to categorize. Teed Rockwell plays the Chapman Stick, a hybrid guitar with an amazing range that he's adapted to the classical music of Northern India. Drummer/percussionist and tabla player Sameer Gupta has also forged his own inimitable blend of Indian classical, jazz, and world music into something all his own. The trio performs as Australian Bebop Ragas, an intriguing moniker that only hints at the adventurous music they produce by melding their diverse backgrounds into ever-shifting soundscapes. On Friday, Aug. 10 at the Freight & Salvage (1111 Addison St., Berkeley). 8 p.m., $18.50, $19.50.
