Reigning Hong Kong sentimentalist Wong Kar Wai (My Blueberry Nights, In the Mood for Love) undertakes the official final cut of his 1994 existential angst-in-the-desert drama of ancient China a confusingly elliptical martial arts film with very little action and very much talk of long-lost love. With the help of a 90s Crown Colony all-star cast including the late Leslie Cheung, both Tony Leungs (Ka Fai and Chiu Wai), Maggie Cheung, Brigitte Lin, Carina Lau, and Jacky Cheung, Wong mixes his patented romantic regret with costumed horse-and-sword play, and we become intensely aware of the passage of time. Wong adapted the screenplay from Louis Chas novel The Eagle-Shooting Heroes (93 min.).
