When: Sat., July 28, 12-6 p.m. and Sun., July 29, 12-6 p.m. 2018
Oakland’s biggest street festival returns this year, scheduled for the last weekend of July instead of its usual mid-August. Headlining Art + Soul is Oakland’s very own R&B trio The Pointer Sisters, who were wildly popular in the ’70s and ’80s for hits such as “Jump (for My Love),” “Automatic,” “Fire,” and “He’s So Shy.” Other homegrown acts on the lineup include rapper Lyrics Born, hip-hop-for-kids group Alphabet Rockers, and Jazz Mafia. Check out the blues stage and the gospel stage, as well as the world/urban dance showcase, the free salsa dance lessons with Mario Salomon’s new band Mario y Su TimbeKO, the turf dance battle, the family-friendly “kiddie carnival,” the arts marketplace, and tons of local food and drink. Grab a ticket in advance for a super-affordable $12 — and you can even bring your kids (under 18) for free.
