Rated R 85 minutes 2009

From the very first scene, Thea Barfoed is primed to explode. And we keep waiting — for the whole length of director Martin Zandvliet’s exhausting, rewarding character study— for harried, alcoholic actress/time bomb Thea (played to within an inch of her life by Paprika Steen) to detonate, either in the midst of her tattered family or on stage, as she portrays Martha in a production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? She seems to absolutely loathe herself. Her young sons, completely estranged, regard her as if she’s a scary panhandler. All we can do is watch her with our mouths agape. A whirlwind demolition derby of an acting job by Ms. Steen, a charter member of the Dogme 95 film movement in Denmark. Screnplay by Zandvliet and Anders Frithiof August. With Michael Falch as Thea’s sympathetic ex-husband. (87 min.)
