When: Fri., Jan. 25, 8 p.m. and Sat., Jan. 26, 8 p.m. 2008
Favorites on the Berkeley folk scene back in the '70s, the all-woman Any Old Time String Band stages a rare reunion Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25 and 26, at the Freight & Salvage (1111 Addison St., Berkeley). Although the quintet's repertoire was supposedly old time and bluegrass, it more often played Cajun, blues, Bahamian, and novelty tunes, aided by harmonious singing and fabulous musicianship. Mandolinist Valerie Mindel (who now lives in Japan) joins old bandmates Suzy Thompson (fiddle, guitar), Sue Draheim (fiddle), Kate Brislin (banjo and kazoo), and Genny Haley (banjo), plus guest bassist Steven Strauss, in new songs and old favorites such as "See You in C-U-B-A," "Shady Grove" and the Joseph Spence-Grateful Dead classic, "I Bid You Goodnight." The concerts unofficially kick off the Freight's fortieth anniversary as the oldest folk club west of the Mississippi. 8 p.m., $20.50, $21.50. FreightandSalvage.com or 510-548-1761.
