Police chases are almost always a bad idea, because they put innocent people in harm's way. And sure enough, that's exactly what happened over the weekend when Berkeley cops chased a car full of suspected murderers into North Oakland. During the high-speed chase, the suspects' Cadillac plowed into another car, killing an innocent driver, whose car then ran into a pedestrian, who was also killed. The suspects had gunned down a Berkeley man in the west end of town with assault rifles before the chase began. There's no doubt that the killers were bad dudes, and Berkeley PD arrested two of them, but the police chase cost two people their lives unnecessarily.
