Another Earth

Rated PG-13 92 minutes 2011

A slender premise gains traction as it plays out in this sci-fi-ish character study of a young woman (Brit Marling) who makes contact with a reclusive composer (William Mapother) after a car crash that killed his family – an accident that was her fault. Complicating matters is the presence in the sky of “Earth 2,” an alternative to our planet where presumably a double exists of every person on Earth. That strained metaphor is a bit hard to swallow, but Marling and Mapother’s all-too-human rapprochement is what makes the story tick. Actress Marling and director Mike Cahill wrote the screenplay, and Marling plays guilty Rhoda Williams with a plausible intensity. (92 min.)
