Anna Bella Eema

When: July 25-26, 8 p.m. 2008

Lisa D'Amour's marvelously rich trailer-park fable about a golem girl, Anna Bella Eema had its West Coast premiere in a compelling Crowded Fire Theater Company just last year, and now it's being given a second local life in a college production at Cal State East Bay's Studio Theatre (25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., Hayward). Irene, who never leaves her mobile home, tells about the day her daughter Anna Bella made a girl named Anna Bella Eema out of mud. D'Amour's language is exquisite -- poetic and funny, mythic and down-to-earth at the same time. As drenched as the play is in fairy-tale tropes, its condemned trailer-park setting makes the flights of fancy seem necessary and completely real.Dawn Monique Williams directs the CSU production on its way to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
