Ani DiFranco

When: Fri., Oct. 16, 8 p.m. 2009

AniDiFrancohas gone from a self-described "little folksinger" to a cultural icon over the past two decades. While she's best known for her intense communiqués detailing the tribulations of the human condition, DiFranco's recent journey into motherhood has brought out her more playful side. Many of the songs on last year's Red Letter Year are full of an infectious joie de vivre and goofy humor. DiFranco's happiness hasn't blunted her politics though, or made her live performances any less intense and she's treating fans to a batch of new songs on the current stretch of her seemingly never ending tour. AniDiFranco and her band playsZellerbach Hall (Bancroft Way at Telegraph Ave., Berkeley) on Friday, Oct. 16. 8 p.m., $35. Tickets.berkeley.edu
