Angel Island: The Aftermath

Yes, it's about as bad as we feared. According to the Chron, half the island is ash, and the other half is closed until further notice. Firefighters managed to save the historic buildings, but half the trees are gone, including everything on Mt. Livermore. Berkeley hills residents take note: the fire would have been much, much worse if park rangers hadn't removed the invasive eucalyptus trees, which burn very hot and would have rendered the fire much more fierce than it was. So the next time you see those lovely fellas around Grizzly Peak, remember: they're tiki torches of doom. Here's a view of the conflagration, shot from Coit Tower.
