Andrew Bird

When: Thu., Feb. 19, 8 p.m. and Fri., Feb. 20, 9 p.m. 2009

In the world of music, fiddle-playing singer-songwriter Andrew Bird is a bit of an egghead, which isn't surprising given how he first picked up the violin at the age of four by way of the Suzuki Method. Or the fact that on his new album Noble Beast, Bird has come up with songs called "Nomenclature," "Souverian," and "Anonanimal" -- "Turkey in the Straw" it ain't. That said, the Chicago native has pushed himself from being a collaborator with late-'90s swing revivalists Squirrel Nut Zippers to a respected indie pop artist comfortable with weaving contemporary nuances like loops and unorthodox song structures into his eclectic fusion of jazz, folk, and chamber pop. Bring an open mind and a thesaurus to theFillmore (1805 Geary Blvd., San Francisco) on Thursday, Feb. 19 (8 p.m.) and Friday, Feb. 20 (9 p.m.). $32.50. TheFillmore.com
