An Evening with Leon Redbone

When: Wed., April 27, 8 p.m. 2011

Leon Redbone is a true original. He's paranoically reclusive, gives few interviews and has never revealed much about his personal life. What he does have is an encyclopedic knowledge of American pop from the Thirties and Forties. He sings these mostly forgotten tunes in a gruff but tuneful baritone that sounds like it's coming from an Edison cylinder. He doesn't write his own songs, but his renditions of yesterday's hits brings them to vibrant life. He tours infrequently, so don't miss this chance to catch one of pop music's most enigmatic performers. At Yoshi's (1330 Fillmore St., San Francisco) Wednesday, Apr. 27, 8 p.m. $26
