After getting their start interpreting Metallica as classical music students in 1993, Finnish orchestral metal band Apocalyptica quickly captured the world’s attention with their mix of cello-based, instrumental covers of heavy rock songs. Their debut record came out of that original jam session: 1996’s Plays Metallica by Four Cellos. In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Apocalyptica re-released the record in 2016 with three new instrumental recordings — “Battery,” “Nothing Else Matters,” and “Seek and Destroy” — and made it available on vinyl for the first time in years. Now, Apocalyptica is touring the world specifically behind Plays Metallica by Four Cellos — a landmark occasion for fans, as Apocalyptica never toured in support of its debut album back in the ’90s. While the group has grown to write original compositions, employ a vocalist, and introduce percussion, this tour will see Apocalyptica stripped down to its essence: four cellos and the metal world’s most enduring inspiration.
