Amtrak Train Kills Pedestrian

A man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train last night in East Oakland.

According to the Merc, Capital Corridor train number 547, en route from Sacramento to San Jose, struck "the male pedestrian" — who has not yet been identified — at 7:53 p.m. near the 700 block of 105th Ave. in Oakland.

"Oakland police said that the man had been sitting on the tracks when he was struck," the Mercury-News reports.

The train — which like all Capital Corridor choo-choos will soon have free wi-fi — was reportedly carrying 33 passengers. Amtrak's ridership has spiked upwards in the last year, according to, which notes that Capital Corridor Joint Powers Authority officials "announced a new ridership threshold was set last month with 130,860 riders — an 11 percent increase vs. a year ago — making January 2011 the best January in the Capitol Corridor's history."

Almost exactly a year ago, also in East Oakland, an Amtrak train destroyed an AC Transit bus that had stalled on the tracks.
