Ammiano Pot Legalization Measure Dies

A historic pot legalization measure authored by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano has died in the Assembly after the San Francisco legislator was unable to move it through a key committee before a Friday deadline. The death of the measure came after the bill squeaked out of the Assembly Public Safety Committee on a 4-3 vote yesterday. It was the first time that a marijuana legalization measure passed a state or federal legislative committee in U.S. history, Ammiano told the CoCo Times.

Ammiano said he hasn’t decided whether to reintroduce the bill later this year or wait for the results of a statewide November ballot measure that would also legalize pot. Joining Ammiano in voting for his pot legalization bill in the public safety committee were Berkeley Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner, and Democratic Assemblymen Jared Huffman of San Rafael and Jerry Hill of San Mateo.
