The Chipmunks are an acquired taste some of your friends will not understand – much like the Three Stooges or Jerry Lewis. But Chipmunk fans of all ages will find plenty to chatter about in this fast-paced juvie comedy, a mix of animation and live action that finds the boys contending with their ongoing 51-year showbiz career (they haven’t aged five minutes), going to high school, a rival group of female singing chipmunks called the Chipettes, and their sleazy ex-manager (David Cross). Bagdasarian Productions’ animation is top-notch, the writing, by three woodland creatures, somewhat less so. Directed amiably by Betty Thomas (Dr. Dolittle, I Spy). Shut up and pass the walnuts (92 min.).
