They’re doing it again. For 60 years, the Ailey company’s annual residency at Cal Performances in Berkeley has made Bay Area audiences believe in the power, creativity, flexibility and incredible beauty of the human mind and body in motion. Arriving this year with four different programs, activities include three Bay Area premieres; two matinee performances of Timeless Ailey, a 30-year retrospective of the venerable choreographer’s work; a community flash mob event; and more. Ailey’s iconic Revelations concludes each performance. Lazarus, a new ballet by choreographer Rennie Harris, is a Cal Performances co-commission, a development associate director Rob Bailis says is an indication of the presenter’s deep relationship with the company. Cast aside disbelief and doubt; celebrate splendid, African-American dance without division.
