All Is Lost

Rated PG-13 105 minutes 2013

Just a lone man (septuagenarian Robert Redford) aboard a sinking sailboat in the middle of the ocean, and what he does to try to survive. We could call filmmaker J.C. Chandor’s ultra-stripped-down high-seas adventure “rigorous,” except that in its way it’s really an extravagantly emotional character study, played by Redford at full throttle but silently, with virtually no dialogue. We don’t even learn the skipper’s name. But we discover what he’s made of. A certain kind of masterpiece by writer-director Chandor (Margin Call), with all the spectacular fury of nature focused on one individual (107 min.).
