Back for its fifth year, Ales for ALS at Faction Brewing remains one of the East Bay’s best and most underrated beer fests. (And for a good cause: All proceeds benefit the ALS Therapy Development Institute.) Every year, Ales for ALS gives a slew of breweries an unusual hop blend, and then those breweries create a special, one-off beer with those hops for the festival. This year, more than 35 California breweries will work with a combo of Ekuanot, Simcoe, Loral, and HBC 344, 520, and 630 hops — and the brewery list is impressive and eclectic. There’s Berkeley’s all-sour brewery the Rare Barrel, San Francisco’s hoppy haven Cellarmaker, the perennially excellent Berryessa Brewing Co. out of Winters, and San Diego heavyweights Firestone Walker, Pizza Port, and Societe, among others. Tickets include unlimited tastings and a shuttle service from BART, and food will be available to purchase from Scolari’s Good Eats, Fist of Flour Pizza Company, Grilled Cheese Guy, and Sticks.
