Albert Nobbs

Rated R 113 minutes 2011

Glenn Close — in a reshaping of her 1982 stage role as a woman passing for male on the job at a Dublin, Ireland hotel in the Victorian era — ingratiates herself slowly, by degrees. The character of the meek servant Mr. Nobbs minces his/her way into our sympathy as a lonely, quite literally repressed person who finally sees a way to grasp happiness when another “quare fellow” comes into the picture: a rambling house painter named Hubert Page (Janet McTeer). Both actresses are excellent in a completely naturalistic way, and director Rodrigo Garcia ensures the drama stays comparatively light on its feet, with apt character roles for Brendan Gleeson, Mia Wasikowska, Pauline Collins, Brenda Fricker, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Aaron Jackson. Close herself collaborated on the screenplay, adapted with John Banville and Gabriella Prekop from an original short story by Irish author George Moore. Chock full of character riches. (113 min.)
