Blues, Folk, & Country

When: Thu., May 22, 8 p.m. 2008

Oakland singer-songwriter Akousa blends jazz into her original acoustic folk songs, a perfect blend for her fresh vocal approach. She recently received an East Bay Community Foundation matching grant to record her debut CD, so her concert on Thursday, May 22, at La PeñaCulturalCenter (3105 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley), is a fund-raiser toward matching that grant and completing her recording. It's also an excellent showcase for this Ghanaian-American composer and guitarist, who has sung in local clubs and at Accra's Jazz Tone jazz club, and whose anti-war song, "We Are One," has been featured on KPFA. 8 p.m. $ or 510-849-2568.
