Ain't Misbehavin': The Fats Waller Musical Show

When: Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m., Sundays, 2:30 p.m., Wednesdays, 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 2:30 p.m. Continues through Oct. 11 2008

Nowadays it seems like half the Broadway musicals are based on movies, and the other half are jukebox musicals or "popsicals" based on the songbook of one pop music giant after another. Ain'tMisbehavin' got in on this trend way ahead of the curve back in 1978, celebrating the boisterous stride piano and raucous flair with a song of Thomas "Fats" Waller. Few jazz giants are more worthy of this kind of tribute. A cast of five opens Center REP's season by tearing through favorites that Waller wrote or made his own, such as "Honeysuckle Rose," "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter," "Your Feet's Too Big," "The Joint Is Jumpin'," "I Can't Give You Anything but Love," and the title song. September 6 through October 11 at LesherCenter for the Arts (1601 Civic Dr., Walnut Creek) or 925-943-7469.
