When: Wed., Aug. 3, 7 p.m. 2011
The kids who attend Cal Performances' annual AileyCamp learn a lot more than ballet, modern, jazz, and African dance during the six-week program — personal development and communications workshops also challenge them to mature as people. This summer, the Berkeley edition of Alvin Ailey's eponymous camp celebrates its tenth year of bringing arts education to underserved middle-school students, tuition free. During the camp finale on Thursday, Aug. 3, Zellerbach Hall (Bancroft Way at Dana St., Berkeley) will fill to the rafters with dancing and the whooping, cheering, and joyous tears of family and friends. For the first time, campers will be joined by members of the Young Musicians Program, a renowned UC Berkeley program that provides specialized training to gifted middle- and high-school musicians at no cost. 7 p.m., free (request tickets in advance). 510-642-9988 or CalPerformances.org.
