Amid the maelstrom of sexual misconduct scandals emerging from virtually every sphere of America life, the Bay Area premiere of Actually feels perfectly timed. The play, from fast-rising playwright Anna Ziegler, depicts a set of circumstances common to university campus life: two college freshmen, one drunken night, and hours of hearings to adjudicate an accusation of rape. Yet Ziegler complicates the familiar narrative by intersecting the topics of race and gender, forcing the audience to question its notion of justice for characters caught in the fog of blurred memory and consent. Tracy Ward directs the Berkeley staging of the show that has been heralded as “undeniably funny, poignant, and profound.”
