Brontez Purnell inspires critics to augment descriptions of art forms with the prefix “punk.” Whether with dance, writing, performance art, or music, the local artist brings a certain esprit de corps, honed by a lifetime of bold exploration. He’s a human exclamation point. He’s a bottle of combustible chemicals, leaving minor explosions in his path. Purnell unapologetically and occasionally adversarially bares personal details that linger after he’s gone away. He also paints, according to promotional material for the aptly named Activity party, whose flier depicts a festively colored abstract. It’s a new monthly “collective social” thrown by Purnell and some co-conspirators upstairs at Vinyl (420 24th St.) in downtown Oakland, beginning Thursday. It’s like a punk social.
