The twenty-year partnership between Cal Performances and renowned choreographer Mark Morris has produced many notable works, including 1998’s Platée, 2006’s King Arthur, and last year’s Spring, Spring, Spring. For Mark Morris Dance Company’s two-hundredth performance at Zellerbach Hall (Bancroft Way below Telegraph Ave., Berkeley), the longtime collaborators have gone over the top with Acis & Galatea, which will get its world premiere this weekend. Morris’ reimaging of Mozart’s classical arrangement of Handel’s baroque opera (which in turn is based on Ovid’s Metamorphosis) spins a marvelous tale of unrequited love between Arcadian shepherd Acis, sea nymph Galatea, and Cyclops Polyphemus. Combining modern dance and music, Acis brings together artists of unsurpassed caliber, among them Morris’ magnificent dancers; the esteemed Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Chorale; fashion and costume designer Isaac Mizrahi; and tenor Thomas Cooley, soprano Sherezade Panthaki, and bass-baritone Douglas Williams in the lead roles.
