Soul, Funk, R&B, & Hip-Hop

When: Thu., May 13, 9 p.m. 2010

Most rappers love words in more of a phonetic than a semantic sense, but few take as much pleasure in pure sound than Aceyalone. Known as the intellect of underground rap crew Freestyle Fellowship, Aceyalone is also the most inclined to use a slightly archaic term like "tomfoolery," simply because he likes its long vowels and the fluid motion of its syllables. He's not a walking Thesaurus per se, but he's certainly a logophile. Aceyalone will appear Thursday, May 13, at the Shattuck Down Low (2284 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley), alongside famed Living Legends emcee Sunspot Jonz, who defected to Los Angeles a few years ago but will always be known as an original Oakland hustler. (He spent a good portion of the Nineties hawking cassettes in front of Amoeba.) 9 p.m., $10-$15.
